In February 2017, Ottawa City Council approved in principle a recommendation by the Ottawa Public Library Board to build a joint-facility with Library and Archives Canada, at an estimated cost of $168 million.  The project is subject to Government of Canada approval. There is no approved budget yet for the construction of the Central Library. In July 2017, Ottawa City Council will receive a report on how the project will be funded.  If approved, the project will proceed to the request for proposals for design services.

The OPL and City are exploring options as part of the funding strategy. This includes partnerships with other levels of government, the sale of the existing assets at 120 Metcalfe Street / 191 Laurier Avenue W (the current Main branch facility), and other fundraising.
